When to Buy a Wedding Dress

Buying a wedding dress isn’t an overnight process. After all, you’re buying one of the most important dresses you’ll ever wear, and you’re looking for something to make you feel confident and beautiful on your wedding day. For an occasion this special, the retail experience is much different than any other shopping experience you’ve ever had—so it’s key to know exactly how long it takes and when you should begin shopping.

After You Say “Yes”

Once you’ve gotten engaged, wedding planning begins! The beginnings of planning your wedding are always fun, as you’re choosing some of the most important parts of your big day before getting into details. One of these major planning points is your dress! Before you begin shopping, there’s only a few things to have set in stone: the venue and the date. This helps you have a better mental picture of your wedding day, so that you can have a better idea of the dress you may want!

10-12 Months Before

This may sound like a long time before the wedding day to begin shopping for a dress, but your wedding dress actually takes several months to come in. Your gown is made to order, and it takes several months for the designer to construct the gown—between sourcing materials to placing final embellishments, the craftsmanship that goes into a designer piece like your wedding dress is a months-long process. Combined with the current supply chain problems, you’ll need to give it several months for your dress to arrive!

2 Months Before

After your dress arrives, you’ll need about two months to allow your seamstress time to get your alterations perfect. Most brides only need minor alterations, such as raising the hem of your gown or taking in the bodice slightly. These alterations ensure everything fits flawlessly on your wedding day, so that you’re fully confident and feeling comfortable the entire time. The last thing you want to be worried about is your wedding dress fitting incorrectly!
